Certification

These steps will guide you through the process of obtaining a Certificate of Qualification (COQ) to become a French teacher in British Columbia. 

Ensure you follow the process accurately and meet all requirements for a smooth and successful application.

Before starting your application, ensure you meet the eligibility requirements for a Certificate of Qualification (COQ) from the Teacher Regulation Branch (TRB) in British Columbia. 

To apply for teacher certification with the Teacher Regulation Branch (TRB) in British Columbia, you must meet the following requirements:

1. Educational Requirements:
– Bachelor’s degree.
– Completion of post-secondary studies in teachable subjects.
– Graduation from an accredited teacher education program (TEP).

2. Professional Fitness:
– Meeting BC’s fitness-to-teach standards, including a clear criminal record check and demonstration of good character.

3. Language Proficiency:
– Proof of French proficiency with the exception of candidate that have completed their full education in French.

4. Work Experience:
– Relevant teaching experience may be required or beneficial.

 

For Internationally Educated Teachers:
You may be eligible to apply if you have a certification from another country.

You will need to provide documented proof of certification, including:
– Completion of a four-year post-secondary program.
– An acceptable teacher education program or a Statement of Standing from an accredited institution.

Note that the evaluation of applications is handled individually by the TRB, with country-specific requirements available online.

You will need to get the required documentation and keep each piece ready to expedite your application. Here is a brief description of the documents you need:

  • Identification documents, such as a birth certificate or other official government identification.
  • Recommendation and an official transcript from the post-secondary institution where you completed your teacher education program.
  • Proof of linguistic proficiency in English or French in accordance with the Certification Standards. This may involve taking language proficiency tests such as TEF, TCF, DELF, or others.
  • Clean criminal record check in any of the countries that you lived, prior to your move to BC.
  • Two confidential character references, ideally from supervisors or a colleague who saw you teach.
  • Practicum reports.

If you need a third party to provide verification for any of these documents (character references, recommendations), ensure you contact those people before you begin the process of applying to limit delays.

Complete the certificate application form provided by the TRB for your Certificate of Qualification (COQ)
Ensure all sections are accurately filled out.

Your application fee is determined by where you completed your teacher education program.
Current fees:
– At a BC or Canadian University: $245
– Outside of Canada: $395

When you are eligible for certification, you will receive an email to pay your annual practice fee. The fee for your first year as a certified teacher is prorated based on when you become certified.

After submitting your application through the TRB’s online portal (outlined in Step 3), your application will be processed.
These are the stages of processing:
– Application submitted.
– Application received.
– Application in process.
– Application complete.
– Application evaluated.

It can take 6-9 months for your application to be fully processed.

After obtaining the COQ from TRB, initiate the application process with the Teacher Qualification Service (TQS) to secure your dedicated teaching card. The TQS card will determine how much you will be paid based on your experience and qualifications.

  • Visit TQS website: Navigate to the TQS website and review the application requirements.
  • Gather necessary documents: Collect transcripts, certificates, and evidence of teaching experience for upload during the application.
  • Complete TQS application form: Fill out the detailed TQS application form with accurate information, emphasizing your COQ from TRB.
  • Submit application and pay fees: Use the provided online portal to submit your TQS application and make necessary payments for processing.
  • Monitor processing stages: Keep track of your application’s progress from submission to evaluation, similar to the TRB process.
  • Receive TQS Card: Upon successful processing, you will obtain your Teacher Qualification Service (TQS) Card, a crucial tool for employers to determine your salary based on teaching experience, degree, and qualifications as a French teacher in British Columbia.
